When Sree met… Hundred Waters

In many ways ‘modestmango.com at SXSW2013′ became not so much a showcase in Glasgow culture blogging but a showcase in ‘Sreeism’. Whether it was dropping words like ‘handjob’ at inappropriate times or queuing three hours for barbeque Sree was a polarizing force in Austin this year. A case in point was Sree’s ‘interview’ with Hundred Waters. In a hotel. With a piano. And Nicole Miglis. (Shudder)

Anyway, I’m not going to talk too much about that interview. We didn’t tape it and Sree didn’t take notes, although he looks good doesn’t he? Like a pro.[2] I can only assume Hundred Waters took pity on us because they offered us guest passes to see them in May at ABC in Glasgow. Sree emailed them this week and they duly followed through on their promise.

Hundred Waters were great tonight, not least because Nicole Miglis and her voice absolutely slay me – probably top 5 on the ‘voices that slay me’ chart.[1] Hundred Waters also sounded comparatively great by supporting a band with probably the lamest name since… Test Icicles (off the top of my head)

So thanks Hundred Waters. Thanks for not outing us, thanks for letting us come to your gig and thanks for your really, really nice sounds.

Lunarcy!

Strangely Lunarcy! provided the most polarising of all the movies the Mango crew watched at SXSW this year. Ostensibly a fairly fun and innocent documentary about socially awkward guys wanting to go to the moon our creative director picked out a hidden subversive undertone running through the whole feature, not to mention a flippantly mentioned and wholly inaccurate medical diagnosis of autism as per the DSM-IV… I mean, come on!

I am not really sure why Sree objected to this documentary. I think it is mostly because he is a bit a berk and felt he had to have an opinion on it. If anything I think it is hard to have much of an opinion on Lunarcy! It is really a pretty innocent and fun story. Chris (pictured above) really steals the show and as somebody pointed out afterwards in the Q&A to director Simon Ennis and Chris himself, he has a phenomenal amount natural charisma, both on screen and in person. I do wonder though what the director of Lunarcy! thought the inevitable reaction would be to Chris and his cause. I want to think that people are not laughing at him. But then again, so what if some are? Chris certainly didn’t seem to care when he was signing the free posters he gave us. Besides, who needs to worry about that when stars are within our grasp!

5 hrs 33 mins to Dubai.

86E is cleaning the lens of her Canon DSLR that has been hanging obediently around her neck since take-off 3 hrs 20 mins ago. I can’t tell which model it is and am not in the mood to ask.

It’s 3.50 am and the aft of Emirates flight EK381 are having their attempts at sleeping undermined by the rapid succession of flashes emanating from 86E.

She has now taken seven close-up photos of her plane-sized bottle of La Vielle Ferme thus adding to the twelve photos her previous bottle of La Vielle Ferme, four photos of her cup noodle, three photos of herself holding the cup noodle whilst throwing the V’s, eight photos of the Emirates flight information screen, seven photos of the flight safety card (front and back), four photos of Total Recall paused at 00:23:45 and five photos of her left armrest.

Is this the first time she has owned a camera? Is this the first time she has been on an aeroplane? Is this the first time that she has been allowed out into society?
